 Inspiring Breaks 2010-11

Shared Care Scotland embarked on a Scotland-wide programme of local Inspiring Breaks workshops to support individuals with support needs and unpaid carers to be more actively involved in shaping the short break and respite care services they receive.  Intotal the programme was delivered to 240 people in 19 locations. The programme has now been completed and evaluated. Thanks to funding from the Long Term Conditions Alliance Scotland we are able to offer these events free of charge.

What was involved?

The workshops and follow-up activity were designed to:

  • Give service users and carers the information, skills and confidence to be the lead partner working with health and social care to determine the short break support they want;
  • Provide person centred planning tools to help people to develop their individual outcomes and to plan how they can be more in control of achieving these;
  • Explain alternative ways that people can be supported to have a break and how they can mobilise wider community resources for short break purposes;
  • Empower service users and carers to create opportunities to contribute to local short break planning and commissioning will also be a key feature of the
    programme, giving them a stronger say in the future direction of services in their
    local area.
